Dear Sir or Madam,

The twenty-first century learner deserves teachers with a deep penchant and love for their profession. Schools therefore seek to employ and retain educators who are reflective practitioners whose skills sets fit the culture of the schools; educators who value diversity and use differentiation as the tool of choice, in short, transformative teachers. Educators who are truly passionate about working on the international scene, energetic, creative thinkers who are dedicated to the culture and success of the school, are sought after. I believe that I can bring those values to your school as I pride myself on being a fellow lifelong learner, one who remains passionate about making a difference and inspiring students through the teaching of English, Literature, History, Social Studies and Drama. Additionally, I am looking for long-term, stable employment abroad and therefore committed to many years of hard work, to ensure the continuing success of the department and by extension, the school. If given the opportunity for an interview by you, I will convince you that I am a motivated teacher who will make a positive impact on the development and continued success at the school. I will bring 36years of excellent performance from AP, KS2 to A -levels in General Paper, Literature, and English Language, Communication Studies, Literature in English and History IGCSE as well as the IB Diploma Program. I have also been fortunate to have assisted with curriculum planning, timetabling, and Schemes of Work for English and Literature and quite recently PSHE. I also conducted several across the nation workshops for CSEC and CAPE. I have also been an IB examiner since 2017 and continued to the 2022 examinations. I was also just given the role of Assessment specialist for OCR Literature; and I have just concluded grading H472/02. Against this, it would be an honour to be considered for the position advertised on teachershorizons.com.

If given the opportunity, I would apply the multifaceted approach to ensure that this school has an English and Humanities curricula that rival the best international as well as national schools’ pass rates. I do teach using modern teaching strategies, including but, not limited to scaffolding, blended learning, concept-based learning, collaborative learning, Inquiry-Based Learning, Socratic seminars, Triad and buddy work, project-based learning and peer assessments. I also ensure that all my classwork and homework assignments are meaningful and properly differentiated to meet the diverse learning needs of an international cohort of learners. Consequently, I create unique and interesting assignments shared on google classroom specifically tailored to the curriculum. As teaching and learning continue to evolve, I employ strategies that meet the individual needs of my students and can adapt to any Learning platforms used by the school. I have been teaching IGCSE for 7 years and IB Language and Literature for 6 years; I am very aware of what the new syllabi require and very confident that I can execute them. Before that, I taught successfully the CSEC, CAPE, and A-Level programs in Jamaica and served as an external as well as an oral examiner. With the current pandemic, I have been using extensively google meet and the google classroom, as learning platforms to do distance teaching, providing live lessons, while still offering students positive feedback. This has also enabled me to further hone my computer skills which have improved significantly now that we are back on site.

In addition to teaching, I enjoy engaging young people in extracurricular activities and would be extremely interested in being involved with the school culture outside of the classroom setting. I have a myriad of interests including, CAS, Journalism Club, Magazine Club, Open Mic, Book Club, Slam Poetry, Speech and Drama Societies, Teens helping Teens, and I DARE YOU CLUB and MUN. As previously stated, I am looking for long-term employment and I never balk at a challenge, I would be thrilled and honored to be given the opportunity to help initiate what could become a cornerstone of school literary culture.

I have found that facilitated, student-centered instruction in the classroom is superior to more traditional teaching styles, when students construct their own learning, they are more likely to retain the requisite information and take pride in their work. The ultimate goal of any school is to disseminate students who will go on to become lifelong learners by employing best practices and learning styles that cater to the needs of the whole child.

Teaching for me is a “ministry” where each day I am able to reflect and reinvent the wheel making sure that the students are the primary beneficiaries of the subjects and life lessons I teach. True passion is infectious and irresistible, my students love my classes because they can perceive how much I value my own education and it inspires them to value their own and develop true international-mindedness.

It has been thirty- six wonderful years, I was blessed to teach at the primary, secondary, and undergraduate levels. The journey has been exhilarating and I look forward to spending my entire life as a lifelong learner and an educator with a deep penchant for children and ALL their needs.

As for as interpersonal skills go, I am a work in progress, as these skills are constantly changing and different scenarios call on one to make the necessary adjustments Thank you for considering my request for employment. I look forward to having the opportunity to discuss the position and my qualifications with you. If you are seeking a teacher who truly loves teaching, then I am the one you should consider.

Most sincerely,

Delzetha Edith Smith nee Sinclair
