TASK 1 – Analyzing the Effects of Irradiance, Temperature, RS and RSh
Task 1 is sub-divided into four parts to analyse the effects of – (i) Irradiance, (ii)
Temperature, (iii) Series Resistance and (iv) Shunt Resistance. To perform Task 3,
students are introduced to the following governing mathematical equations:

Where, IS (STC) is the reverse saturation current under STC; ISC (STC) is the short-circuit
current under STC, VOC (STC) is the open-circuit voltage under STC, which is equal to
0.636 V. n is the diode ideality factor, which is a measure of how closely the solar cell
behave as an ideal diode under dark. For a device with ideal diode like behavior, n = 1
and in real-life devices n > 1. IS is the calculated reverse saturation current for the chosen
simulation temperature T and TSTC refers to 25°C or 298K. Eg is the bandgap energy of
the semiconductor, for Si, it is 1.1 eV at STC. k is the Boltzmann constant (1.38×10-23
J/K) and KI is the temperature coefficient of short-circuit current.
TASK 2 – Simulate I-V and P-V Characteristics Curves
To study the effect of
➢ irradiance, the illumination intensity is varied from 200W/m2
to 1000 W/m2 with
an increment of 200W/m2
. Students are required to simulate I-V and P-V curves.
➢ temperature, within the range -25°C to 75°C with an increment of 25°C.
Students are required to simulate the I-V and P-V curves.
➢ series resistance varies from 5 mΩ to 45 mΩ with an increment of 10 mΩ.
Students are required to simulate the I-V curve and P-V curves.
➢ shunt resistance varies from 100 mΩ to 300 mΩ with an increment of 50 mΩ.
Students are required to simulate the I-V and P-V curves.
