    Position Summary : Report directly to the Reimbursement/Coding Manager and serve as a subject matter expert for the coding staff.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Daily supervision, prioritization, and coordination of workflow activities to ensure accurate and timely coding of all charts.
  • Act as point person for resolution of all inpatient chart backlogs and issues.
  • Perform coding audits to ensure quality metrics are being met as well as identify opportunities for coding education to staff.
  • Perform productivity audits to ensure metrics are being met.
  • Research and answer inpatient coder's questions using official coding guidelines and the use of 3M references.
  • Assist with the appeals review process to ensure timely denial response as well as the appropriateness of appeal response.
  • Coordinate coder training to ensure all staff are up to date on Coding Guidelines as well as code updates.
  • Interact daily with CDI to ensure coordination of coding with CDI joint processes.
  • Perform accurate coding and abstracting.
  • Prioritize daily workload for coding staff and provide coverage for coding and abstracting job functions, as necessary to ensure department goals are met.
  • Work directly with the CDI, Case Management and Patient Account departments serving as educator/resource for coding accuracy.
  • Interact with physicians, nursing and other allied ancillary departments as well as Document Imaging staff to ensure timely completion of coding.
  • Facilitates staff training to ensure productivity and accuracy standards are met.
  • Supervise the activity of coding staff to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Identify issues on unbilled inpatient accounts weekly and resolution.
  • Monitor and report staff attendance, productivity, and accuracy standards.
  • Process payroll weekly.
  • Monitor accounts for patient status changes.
  • Submit feedback for employee evaluations to manager.
  • Perform quality assessment on coders monthly and provide feedback and education.
  • Assist department management with special projects and reports as requested. Possess good initiative, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Promotes a clean and safe environment of care, utilizing the SAFE error prevention habits.
  • Provide the highest standard of privacy and confidentiality in matters involving patients, coworkers, and the hospital by abiding by the Standards of Conduct.
  • Required Qualifications :

    Education and Training :

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) required.
  • Two to three years of related experience in a hospital medical record department.
  • Extensive coding and auditing skills.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Record required, Cerner preferred, ICD10CM/PCS/coding system and MSDRG/APRDRG knowledge required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of automated encoder system, 3M preferred.
  • Excel experience preferred.
  • Previous leadership experiences a plus.
  • Previous experience using computer assisted coding (CAC) software a plus.
