In the dynamic landscape of Southeast Asia, Unilever has strategically positioned itself in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos (MCL). Unilever's operations in MCL, clubbed as one UL market, stand out as a rapidly growing business in the region, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. In Myanmar, Unilever has established a formidable presence through a joint venture partnership with EAC. The JV business is one of the big companies in Myanmar with its footprint of 3 factories and more than 1000 FTEs. In tandem with Myanmar, Unilever operations in Cambodia and Laos have also emerged as thriving entities, contributing significantly to Unilever's growth in the region.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lawyer to join the SEA legal team to manage the legal affairs across the Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos (MCL) region and the regional legal team consisting of 3 team members. This role is suitable for combining the responsibilities with a senior legal counsel role for Homecare (or another BU) in 1 dedicated country outside of MCL, as an integrated role. The location for this role can be in either Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia or Laos. Local conditions apply.

MAIN JOB DESCRIPTION

Broad legal business partner leadership role – the key areas of responsibility are summarized below.

We are looking for an internationally minded, highly collaborative lawyer who leads by example.

This role reports to the Homecare BU General Counsel, SEA (or other SEA BU General Counsel depending on the integrated role)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

General

• Legal business partner to MCL business leadership team, including the country managers, supply chain leaders, CMOs, CHROs etc. of each country for all legal matters in the MCL region, supported by the lawyers within the MCL region
• Company secretary supporting the management of our joint venture in Myanmar
• Member of the Leadership Team for MCL
• Member of the Homecare Legal Leadership Team in SEA
• Manager of 3 legal team members in the MCL region
• Developing and evolving the MCL legal strategy and priorities
• Managing legal input to MCL business from sourcing to selling
• Developing and maintaining relationships with relevant external contacts (e.g. legal functions of key customers, Governmental organizations, regulators, trade / industry associations, law firms and external bodies)

Consumer product laws in Homecare industry

• Good understanding of key regional laws and the MCL Legal environment, for instance what regulators are focusing on, trends, enforcement areas of priorities, competitor challenges (inbound and outbound).
• Experience with chemicals and environmental regulations, sustainability agenda, advertising rules and interaction with advertising authorities.
• Product recall rules and regulations.
• Previous work experience supporting Homecare is desirable but not a prerequisite.

Legal business partnering

• Provide legal advice and risk analysis to the business leaders in MCL regarding Investor Boards, business growth initiatives, strategic business priorities, brand projects and product compliance. This includes for the legality of product claims, input into preparation of product art work and communication materials in accordance with all relevant legal rules across the SEA region.
• Advise on import and export related topics and all relevant business integrity matters.
• Coordinate competitive challenges from authorities and competitors, inbound and outbound, to align with Unilever's business strategies.
• Create a highly motivated and well-trained team of internal lawyers across the MCL region who are subject matter experts in their national legislation.
• Support relevant Issue Management Teams, and various cross-category / divisional groups and initiatives regarding legal aspects of product safety, product recall, PR risks.
• Closely collaborate with Unilever's Trademark counsels and other IP experts to ensure IP assets are optimally protected and enforced.
• Draft, advise on, review and negotiate, commercial contracts.
• Identify competition risks, privacy risks and other compliance risks and collaborate with subject matter experts in Unilever's legal team to resolve them.

Legal subject matter expertise

Candidates must be fully operational (5+ years relevant experience) in Multinationals or comparable experience within the following areas:

• Consumer law
• Marketing and advertising law
• Regulatory and product liability law
• Commercial contracts

Candidates must have at least an intermediate working knowledge in the following topics:

• Business Integrity
• Intellectual property (in particular trademarks)
• Competition law

Language skills

• 1 local language, in addition to fluency in English, highly beneficial
• Chinese (Mandarin) language skills ideal (for communication with Joint Venture Partner representatives) but not a prerequisite
